Rev. Jonathan Nweke of the Diocese of Awgu, Nigeria, who served as an associate pastor and administrator in the Diocese of Antigonish 2004-2012, died on May 31, 2016 in Nigeria.

News of his passing was a shock for many in our diocese, who remembered Fr. Nweke as a pastor, colleague and friend of deep faith and great kindness. The years since his service here and many miles separating us from his home in Nigeria did not dim the memories held by those who served with him, and whom he served. A recent memorial service in Guysborough, where he spent seven years, paid tribute, and individuals continue to share their memories and prayers of a man who worked among us only briefly, but left a lasting impression.

Born June 7, 1970, he was a native of Ituku in the Awgu local government area of Enugu State, Nigeria. He was ordained a priest on August 8, 1998 and came to the Diocese of Antigonish in 2004. He served as Associate Pastor, New Waterford and Area Pastoral Grouping Sept. 1, 2004 – June 28, 2005. From June 29, 2005 to June 27, 2012 he served as Administrator of St. Ann, Guysborough; St. Peter, Larry’s River; St. Joseph, Charlos Cove; St. Patrick, Guysborough Intervale and St. Thomas, Salmon River. He also completed his Residency in Spiritual Care through Capital Health, Halifax, Sept. 2011-May 2012 at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, and local parishes. At the time of his passing, he was Rector of St. Vincent de Paul Minor Seminary, Agbogugu; Vocation Director and the Dean of Awgu Deanery.
Funeral mass and interment were celebrated June 22 at St. Michael’s Cathedral, Awgu.
