What does Advent mean to our Youth?
What does Christmas mean to our Youth?

What does Advent mean to our families?
What does Christmas mean to our families?

These are the types of questions that keep us awake to the Spirit as we prepare to connect with our youth.
(P.S. Did you recognize the "Advent" verbs?)
During November, we had many opportunities to gather with our youth. The Dinner for Young Adults, the Alpha series, THRIVE Youth Rally, Parish Youth Rally "You can change the world", Confirmation Retreat as well as a Family Retreat by NET Ministries...all wonderful times for us to gather, grow in faith, and meet new friends.

During Advent, there are still more options for Youth and Families:

a)  YOUTH MASS at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys on Sunday December 9 at 6pm. We hope families will bring their kids, that confirmation classes will come for the teaching, and that young people will be open to learning ministries such as altar serving, lectoring, hospitality, and Eucharistic Ministry. Refreshments will be available after Mass. We hope to fill the church!

b) On December 4 and 11, Ninian Cozy STUDY Cafe will be available for those seeking a warm place to study and enjoy a bowl of soup.

c) In early December, many of us are going to a Mental Health workshop to gain skills to deal with youth mental health. If you wish to attend, please send me an email!

d) We are looking to hire a part time Youth Minister for the Inverness Deanery and another for the Antigonish / Guysborough Deanery. As we are still in early stages of Youth Ministry, this role needs a mature person who has the creativity to imagine new approaches and yet the young-at-heart attitude that is non-judgemental and open to all. We also dream of a Youth Minister who can speak French for our French speaking youth! If this sounds like you, give me a call (902-870-9117)

So we are trying new activities, revamping old activities, and looking for more and more ways to connect.

New thinking.....
I also think we are on the verge of moving to a more expansive that partners with other Christian Churches and community organizations. What if we could partner with other social..yes...secular groups in doing good things during Advent? What if we could fund something that brings the Christmas message to others?

May our Advent preparations include prayers for youth that we might discover more and more ways to connect with youth and accompany their faith journeys.

Thank you to the people of the Diocese who held us in prayer for "Ignite your Faith Journey...the Amazing Race" and to those who were able to join us April 14 at Our Lady of Fatima.

Our 2016 Youth Ministry Think Tank at St. Louis Parish, Louisdale brought together youth ministry advocates from across our diocese.
Facilitator Anne Walsh led everyone through exercises of exploration, discovery and planning.

You Give Them Something to Eat is a 70-page text that can be used by dioceses, eparchies, parishes, youth groups and organizations to assist in reflections on youth ministry, to identify strengths and weaknesses in current approaches, and to build an outreach ministry that meets the needs of young people. The publication is available for free download from CCCB publications and includes a preface by Bishop Brian Dunn.
